Annual Rye is a fast-germinating seed that performs well when used to increase organic matter, suppress weeds and prevent erosion. It is also popular for grazing. The nurturing qualities of this seed make it perfect for use in ‘living sod’ cash crop systems, as it reduces soil splashing, improves the quality of crops, and can even suppress diseases and pests. Farmers use it to improve their topsoil systems. It can be planted year-round in higher elevations; otherwise, cooler winter months are recommended. Once well established, Annual Rye performs well in temporarily waterlogged soils, however, it requires sun as it does not tolerate shade for long periods of time.
